“Introduction to Sustainable ICT” is an online course, developed within the framework of GreenChips-EDU – an EU-backed initiative with the support of the Digital Europe Programme of the European Union. GreenChips-EDU aims to attract engineering talents with a focus in “green semiconductors”, designed with sustainability in mind. The project seeks to attract engineering talents by aligning education with sustainability goals and ideas. The goal is to empower students to contribute to a green and circular economy.
About this course
This course explores the physical reality behind the digital world, examines its impacts across the entire life cycle, and provides the tools to critically assess digital solutions through the lens of sustainability. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to make informed decisions and adopt responsible digital practices that minimise negative impacts while maximising the benefits of digital technologies for society.
Learning Objectives
- Describe what digital technology is and understand its physical nature, its infrastructure and its evolution within our societies.
- Identify and explain the main environmental, social, economic and geopolitical impacts of digital technology throughout its entire life cycle.
- Critically analyse digital solutions, taking into account planetary boundaries, rebound effects and the relationship between benefits and impacts.
- Adopt and promote responsible digital practices in order to reduce the negative impacts of digital technology whilst enhancing its positive contributions to society.
