What is the EU CodeWeek?

EU CodeWeek is a grassroots initiative that promotes digital literacy and coding skills across Europe. Launched in 2013 by the European Commission, it aims to demystify coding and highlight its relevance in the modern world by offering millions of people, especially students, opportunities to explore coding, robotics, and other digital skills. Open to all ages and skill levels, EU CodeWeek helps participants not only learn to code but also understand how coding powers technology that shapes our everyday lives.

The importance of EU CodeWeek lies in its focus on bridging the digital skills gap and preparing future generations for a technology-driven world. In today’s digital economy, coding is increasingly becoming a foundational skill just as important as reading and writing. By engaging people early, particularly students, EU CodeWeek fosters problem-solving, creativity, and logical thinking, all of which are critical in a wide range of industries. Moreover, it supports the European Commission’s larger agenda of boosting innovation, digital inclusivity, and competitiveness in Europe, ensuring that more citizens are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in the digital era. JA Europe are leading the Code4 Europe Consortium Project which will run the EU CodeWeek for the next two years.
